1/5 - 3/23 6th annual Film Festival seeking entries

Ocean County Library’s annual Film Festival is expanding in 2012 and is looking for entry submissions. This year’s competition will have two age divisions: high school students, and adults. Each entry must be an original work. This year’s film festival will be held in two venues, Mancini Hall and the newly-opened Traco Theater. Funding for this year’s film festival is made possible in part by the Ocean County Library, the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission, and the Kiwanis clubs in Ocean County. Applications for submitting videos to the library’s 6th annual competition and entry rules will be available at www.theoceancountylibrary.org or at a local Ocean County Library branch until March 23rd.

Endangered manatees continue to need our help. 453 manatees died from all causes in 2011; 88 from boat strikes and at least 112 from cold stress. In the last two years, a total of 1,219 manatees died from all causes. The population is estimated to be about 5,000 concentrated year-round in Florida. Make a Valentine’s Day worth remembering. Adopt a real Florida manatee for someone special this year. Six branches of the Ocean County Library will present “Music with Friends,” January through April. The music and play programs are designed for children with autism and their family members. All family members will be given the opportunity to sing, move, drum and use rhythm instruments. “Music with Friends” will offer a place to network, gain support and build relationships. It will allow children with special needs to express themselves in their own unique way. All ages are welcome. The program is free. It will be offered in the Barnegat, Brick, Lacey, Manchester, Plumsted and Toms River branches. 1/28 - 3/31 Snowbirding Tours by Jitney Offered at Forsythe Refuge

The Friends of Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge will offer public “Snowbirding” tours of the refuge’s Wildlife Drive by jitney bus on Saturdays, January 28th, February 25th, and March 31st, departing at 1pm. Led by a Volunteer Master Naturalist, these tours are an opportunity to learn about and observe the exciting and often unexpected birds and other creatures that spend the winter at the Refuge. Tours will start at the Refuge Visitor Information Center, 800 Great Creek Road in Galloway. The tours will be limited to 12 passengers. The vehicle is able to carry 2 wheel chair participants. The tours will take a minimum of 1 1/2 hours and will be guided by a naturalist. A donation to the Friends of Forsythe is suggested. ReClam the Bay speakers are now available for groups of all ages throughout Ocean County. Presentations address Barnegat Bay’s problems through a variety of hands on presentations designed so that all ages can understand the issues. Guardian Angel Service Dogs, Inc. is a fully incorporated 501 (c) (3) organization whose mission is to provide education and raise awareness about the role of service dogs and the different types of assistance they may provide to persons with invisible health issues such as Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, Seizure Disorders, Hypoglycemic Unawareness, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and some spectrum disorders such as Aspergers or Autism. It is important for the public to know that people whose lives might be improved or even saved by having a service dog, may have a disability that is not visible. Individuals who struggle with invisible disabilities often will benefit from having a canine companion in their lives to enhance quality of life, provide hope, independence and peace of mind.

Guardian Angel Service Dogs, Inc. helps families find local resources to help offset the costs associated with the purchase and training of a service dog. In addition, Guardian Angel Service Dogs, Inc. will host fundraising and community programs to help spread awareness and grow their programs, thereby reaching more families and providing increased access to their services.

Many of us struggle with health issues in our own lives, as well as in the lives of those we love. Would you like to learn about healing from a Biblical/pastoral perspective? The UMW (United Methodist Women) of Manahawkin UMC present Chaplain Barbara Miles, a member of The International Order of St. Luke the Physician, an ecumenical organization dedicated to the Christian healing ministry.
